SENATE BILL 5910

State of Washington

69th Legislature

2026 Regular Session

By Senators Cortes, Frame, Pedersen, and C. Wilson

Prefiled 12/17/25. Read first time 01/12/26. Referred to Committee on Early Learning & K-12 Education.

AN ACT Relating to school district communications to the general public; amending RCW 28A.320.090 ; and creating a new section.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

NEW SECTION. Sec. 1. The legislature finds that the public has a right to information about the instructional program, operation, maintenance, and outcomes of their local schools. To promote transparency in government, school districts must have the authority to inform the general public regarding all aspects of schools including, but not limited to, curriculum, student achievement, school safety, school budgets, facility condition and needs, and sources of funding, such as school district ballot propositions.

This responsibility to inform the public is more acute now than ever before given the loss of many local media outlets, the changes in the modes in which the public seeks and consumes information, the spread of misinformation, and the inability of many in our communities, particularly those most vulnerable or otherwise underserved, to access factual information about government.
