WHEREAS, It is recognized in Washington state and nationally, that the third Monday of each February honors the accomplishments of two of our most influential presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, who fought to establish and protect our freedom, and the many other presidents who have upheld our constitutional rights and freedoms; and

WHEREAS, The February date was chosen to signify the birthdays of these two presidents, George Washington's on February 22 and Abraham Lincoln's on February 12; and

WHEREAS, George Washington, the first president of the United States of America, courageously commanded the troops that won our freedom during the Revolutionary War, which established our country and signified the beginning of an everlasting commitment to freedom and democratic ideals; and

WHEREAS, Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States of America, led the Union during the Civil War, delivered the Gettysburg Address, and enacted the Emancipation Proclamation, which ended slavery in the United States; and

WHEREAS, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln both fought tirelessly to expand the rights and freedoms of Americans; and

WHEREAS, We honor the legacies of all the presidents of our country who have exhibited the strength, determination, and leadership in the face of adversity at home and abroad;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington State House of Representatives commend the contributions and efforts of our nation's presidents in the name of democracy, equality, and the pursuit of a more perfect union.
