 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 2025-4605

HR 4605

WHEREAS, Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church, originally established as the Seattle Japanese Methodist Episcopal Church on January 28, 1904, has faithfully served its members and the broader community for 120 years; and

WHEREAS, The church began as a Japanese language ministry to Japanese immigrants, with its Issei members developing and nurturing an English language division for subsequent generations; and

WHEREAS, The church has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to spiritual growth, community service, and social justice throughout its history; and

WHEREAS, Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church provided critical support to Japanese immigrants arriving in our state, offering temporary housing, job information, English classes, and other essential services; and

WHEREAS, The church actively opposed anti-Japanese discrimination through education, legal strategies, and community outreach, and served as a place of support and community during the forced incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II; and

WHEREAS, The church has adapted and innovated through the decades, continuing its mission through the Great Depression, World War II, and the COVID-19 pandemic; and

WHEREAS, The church has been a welcoming and inclusive community, committed to serving all in love;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives hereby recognize and celebrate the 120th anniversary of Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express our deep gratitude for the church's continuing work to build a welcoming and inclusive community where all are accepted and celebrated.
