Whereas, the Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force that
can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States; and
Whereas, only 3,497 recipients in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard have
been awarded this acknowledgment of extraordinary achievement in military service since its creation in
1861; and
Whereas, 473 Americans received the Medal of Honor for their service during World War II; and
Whereas, only four of these recipients are still living today; and
